Why do dogs bark?
Dogs bark for many reasons and it is important to understand these reasons before we can properly train a dog to only bark when acceptable. Even though we may find it annoying, barking is a form of communication for our furry friends. This is why we do not want to train a dog to never bark. With a deeper understanding of the different causes and types of barking, we then know which barks to encourage and which ones to discourage. Below we have a list of the reasons why a dog typically barks.

Reasons for Barking:

1. To Alert or Warn

This type of barking is typically encouraged by dog owners. It is well known that throughout history we have used dogs to alert us when we might be in danger. It is when the bark is low in pitch and combined with growling, this is a sign of aggression or fear. It is helpful to know the difference between a bark that is intended to alert you versus an aggressive bark, because you do not want to accidentally discourage the dog from alerting you of the presence of a stranger. At the same time, you do not want to encourage the dog to be aggressive when it is not necessary.

2. To Get Attention

Attention is another reason dogs bark. Barking for attention can be bothersome and this is especially true for puppies. Some dogs will continue to do bark until they are given what they want. This is the dog’s way of training their master. If you have a dog that is trying to train you and you wish to curb this behavior, then this is the kind of barking that bark control collar can help you to correct.

3. To Show Excitement

Dogs love to bark when they are excited and some dogs are easier to excite than others. These types of barks are usually sharp and short. When a dog is have a good time and they want everyone to know. The more playful and active, the more barking might occur. This is not a bad type of barking, unless you live in a neighbor where it is necessary to be quiet. If this is the only time your dog barks, it could be convenient for your dog to only wear the bark control collar during play time.

4. To Self Identify

Dogs will commonly bark at other dogs in the area. Perhaps you have even experience living in a neighbor with multiple dogs and have noticed that when one dog starts barking a chain reaction happens. This is normal behavior for dogs, but can be quite bothersome for you and your neighbors. This is goes double for you if your dog is the loudest. It is for the benefit of you and the consideration of your neighbors that have led to the invention of bark control collars in the first place.

5. As an Outlet of Energy

If your dog has a habit for barking for what seems to be no reason at all and perhaps is even known to be an active breed, this could be because they have a large amount of pent up energy and desperate for a way to release it. Another way to put this is that your dog is bored and looking for any outlet. This is another canine behavior that can be troublesome for you and your neighbors, but also one that can be corrected.

6. To Show Displeasure

For many of us, it is not appropriate to bring our dogs to work. Since dogs are very social creatures, they can sometimes develop anxiety when their owner is away. This is the kind of barking that can be quite annoying for your neighbors, because you are not home to correct the behavior. This is when bark control collars play their most important roll in keeping your dog from being a local and vocal disturbance.
